On a recent vacation, I took my 10 year old daughter and her friend to a chocolate and ice cream shop. We had purchased a pie earlier that day and were excited to enjoy it “à la mode” style. Approaching the counter, I asked the young lady if they sold pints of ice cream. No, was her reply. Now, 95% of the time, the potential transaction ends right there. Sale lost. Except, this employee looked around some and then offer, “I can fill this milkshake cup and charge you for three scoops, that’s probably a pint.” Sold! She could have charged me for 6 scopes at this point as I was hooked by your drive and creative thinking to service her customer.
We purchased two cups of ice cream, I complemented the employee on her creative thinking and explained what just happened to my daughter and her friend on the way home. Listen to your customers. Be creative in how you are and can service them. Don’t lose the sale!
And yes, the pie, with ice cream on top, was delicious.
